Many coaches don’t understand the rich and eclectic history of coaching, thinking that it sprung up in the 1980s or 90s. In fact its roots go much farther back, some say to Socrates. From the motivator speakers of the 1920s, to humanistic and transpersonal psychology of the 1960s, through the Human Potential Movement of the 1970s and into halls of business in the 1980s – coaching defies all attempts at definition and containment. Join Vikki for a look into the history and roots of coaching, with emphasis on coach development/training/education, assessment, and credentialing. This broad industry conversation will look at the complex, dynamic history from the influence of root disciplines to socioeconomic conditions that nourished the rise of coaching. We will then look at what we have accomplished and the current challenges today, ending with an exploration of what the future may hold for coaching.
