Akin, Michelle; Technology: The Death (& Rebirth) of Intimacy
In our current technologically focused world, we are offered an infinite number of ways to connect with people around the globe. Consequently, we also have a infinite number of ways to cut ourselves of from heart to heart connection with our clients. In this talk, Michelle Akin, PCC, will explore the ways in which technology could be the death of intimacy, and how we as coaches and trainers can leverage technology for deeper intimacy with ourselves and our clients.

Bolton, Nick; Towards Transformational Dialogue: Coaching as a Response to the Human Condition
Towards Transformational Dialogue: Coaching as a Response to the Human Condition will explore both the intellectual roots and the emerging future of coaching as a truly transformational space for asking and answering age-old questions around personal meaning. What were once questions for the intellectual elite are now firmly a part of most people’s experience of life in a time when most basic needs are met.
The workshop will ask what it means to be human and how coaching as a form of transformational dialogue can create a space of radical unknowing that allows for each individual to make sense of life their own way free from preconfigured frameworks of meaning. It will explore how previously “high-brow” debates and movements such as postmodernism, social-constructionism and more, have shaped the norm for how we think about life issues and have created the conditions for what are both deeply individual and collective responses that must be personally navigated.
The workshop will create its own space for participants to think about how coaching is a response to what it means to be human in the 21st century with the epistemologies and ontologies that are dominating our ways of thinking in the west.

Curnow, Karen & Terence Maltbia; Examining our Cultural Roots to Transform Our Schools
The dynamics of power, privilege, rank and culture (PPRC) have a profound effect on how coach training and coaching are delivered, where they are delivered, and how they are received. Brought to you by the Power & Culture Summit team, this segment puts a spotlight on the dynamics of PPRC and on how to recognize and evolve beyond the cultural roots that helped bring us to where we are today – as individuals and as schools. You will explore and acknowledge the impact of the sources of your cultural programming personally and as an organization (considering racial, ethnic, professional, and many other sources), recognize the lenses and frameworks those sources provided/created, and acknowledge their impact on your current ways of thinking, curriculum, faculty demographics, student make-up, and more. This will be a rich and transformative exploration as you learn from the experiences of others as well. You will walk away with new awareness, immediate actions, and longer-term steps you can take to help your school evolve beyond its history and contribute to the transformation of your program and our profession to ensure we serve all students and clients.

Deaton, Ann; When Either/Or Won’t Do: How Coaching Leverages the Productive Tension of Both/And Thinking for Sustainable Impact
- Which is better-to support your coaching clients, OR to challenge them?
- Is it preferable to listen to what is said in a coaching session, OR to what goes unsaid?
- In effective coaching, does the client gain awareness OR take action?
- To enable coaches to make a solid living, should coach training programs focus on teaching coaching skills OR on teaching students to build a sustainable business?
If you find yourself responding “Well, it depends” or “Actually, it’s both”, you are experiencing the importance of Polarity Thinking, when it comes to effective coaching.
Polarities are interdependent pairs such as Support and Challenge, Self and Other, Awareness and Action. They are all those places where we, and our clients, experience tension that cannot be resolved by choosing one and neglecting the other. Either choice is right and, by itself, either is also insufficient to generate sustainable results. In this session, we will engage with the ICF core coaching competencies, noticing the inherent polarities, such as Structure and Flexibility, in the coaching process. Together, we will map several key polarities and identify next steps for leveraging polarity thinking in our work as coaches, as teachers, and as representatives of the coaching profession.

Espinal, Elena; Beyond Coaching: Thinking of our Future
Coaching is clearly oriented to create a future that is not a continuation of the past, and expresses a new understanding of human beings. Competences helped us in the ability of training coaches, and probably this will not be enough . What if we think together in developing more a “being”, and “observer” more flexible to inhabit a future that will not be a continuation for the past?
Let´s talk together about developing Sensitivities that could help us and our trainees in being coaches that can play as partners in the creation of the future, being more consistent with our existentialist paradigm of origin, instead of continuing in the same Cartesian model, where we are trying to adapt a profession that is an expression of the possibility of change and transformation.
Repeating Fernando Flores phrase: This is our challenge today, or we can finish being “cheap Psychologists” listening for solving what is in front of them, instead of opening new worlds for Humanity.

Fridjhon, Marita; Addressing Complementary Topics : “Shifting from the speed of change to the speed of evolution
The profession of coaching has its roots in multiple disciplines. Over time it set a new standard for the integration of relevant material and experiences from different professions into a body of work uniquely serving individual and systemic growth.
With so much research currently focusing on the speed of change and upheaval as a daily reality, it has become challenging – even in coaching – to focus on “being” rather than doing. In corporate and executive work, performance, and ability to deal with upheaval, has become key goals. Once again we are challenged to think out of the box, to lift the gaze beyond the obvious research that we all are familiar with. Where else might there be relevant information to create from? To quote Dr. Marshall Goldsmith “what got us here, won’t get us there”
This session will pull together research from longevity studies, animal research on ‘pecking order’, studies on isolation and increase in suicide statistics, top challenge themes in leadership and more, to gather new insights. When looking at these widely varying fields of research a remarkable theme of challenge and solution emerges. From that we can, and will, build new practices and approaches in real time, to shift from the speed of change and step into invitation of the speed of evolution.
Participants will leave with new data, provocative challenges, relevant new approaches and tools and a different sense of what is possible – and needed not only in their practices – but for this profession

Larson, John; Using Technology for Materially Better Coaching Outcomes
Unless applied in earnest, coaching devolves to little more than some really good ideas that soon fade from memory: feel good insights that make no difference.
In this session we’re going to look at the very real and human problem of what it is to make space in one’s life to act upon coaching received
No matter how skillful the listening, how great the material, and how brilliant the co-creation of insights during coaching sessions, we’ll explore how structures to support the coachee BETWEEN those sessions are often what make the pivotal difference. In doing so we’ll unearth distinctions and best practices in an oft ignored area of coach training: how to design and set in motion structures that better assure coachee success.

Zampella, Tony; Listening for Future: Bringing a generous dose of nothing to coaching
Listening is the ultimate commitment to our roots, our practice, and our future.
- Speaking cannot say what listening is.
- What isn’t said, cannot be said, as it cannot be heard.
So then, what is listening?
Mostly, listening is seen as a process beginning with not speaking and then capturing what others have said. At its fullest, however, listening consists of a radical openness of mind, heart, and will that expands awareness of self, focuses attention on others, and generates meaning from a deeper intention.
With the generative power of listening we tune into emerging futures: to what’s happening and emerging in ways that guides questions, shapes observations, and engages conversations for possibility. Such deep listening requires a new relationship to who we are as humans.
This workshop will present a framework to help clarify different levels of listening such as Apprentice, Expert, Professional, Master and Co-Creator. It presents an ontological inquiry into frames and offers contemplative practices for observing and cultivating future in your listening, as well as observing and expanding the listening of your clients.
Participants will leave with greater appreciation of this territory in your life and a framework to observe (practice) listening in your clients.
