In today’s complex and often challenging world, many individuals carry the invisible scars of past trauma. As a professional coach, understanding and integrating trauma-informed practices into your coaching methodology is crucial for demonstrating ethical practices and providing the best support to your clients. This 90-minute workshop will equip you with the knowledge and tools necessary to create a safe, supportive environment for clients who may be experiencing the effects of past trauma. The workshop will cover three key areas: using trauma-sensitive coaching language, recognizing signs that warrant referral to medical specialists, and implementing exercises to help clients regain a sense of safety.

    1. Trauma-Sensitive Coaching Language:
      • Effective communication is the cornerstone of any coaching relationship in order to cultivate trust and safety. In this segment, we will explore how to use language that is sensitive to the needs of trauma survivors. You will learn how to:
        1. Establish a sense of safety and trust through your choice of words and tone.
        2. Avoid re-traumatizing language that might inadvertently trigger a trauma response.
        3. Employ empowering language that validates the client’s experiences and promotes healing.
        4. Utilize reflective listening and empathetic responses to reinforce a supportive coaching dynamic.
    1. Recognizing Warning Signs for Medical Referral:
      • As a coach, it’s vital to listen actively to know when a client’s needs extend beyond the scope of your expertise. This part of the workshop will help you identify red flags that indicate the necessity for a referral to a medical or mental health specialist. You will learn to:
        1. Identify symptoms of severe trauma responses, such as dissociation, panic attacks, or intense emotional dysregulation.
        2. Understand the limits of your role as a coach in dealing with trauma-related issues.
        3. Develop a referral protocol that respects client confidentiality and ensures a smooth transition to specialized care.
        4. Communicate the need for referral to your client in a supportive and non-judgmental manner.
    1. Exercises for Managing Trauma Responses:
      • When a client is triggered during a coaching session, it’s essential to have strategies to help them regain a sense of safety. In this section, you will discover practical exercises designed to support clients in stepping out of their trauma response and into a mental safe space. These exercises include:
        1. Grounding techniques that anchor the client in the present moment.
        2. Physical Exercises that allow clients to step out of a trauma fight, flight, freeze, or fawn trauma responses to release physical tension associated with trauma.
        3. Visualization practices that help clients create a mental ‘safe place’ where they can retreat when feeling overwhelmed.
        4. Mindfulness exercises that promote relaxation and reduce anxiety.
    1. Interactive Components:
      • Throughout the workshop, you will engage in interactive activities designed to reinforce learning and practical application. These will include role-playing scenarios, group discussions, and guided practice sessions. You will have the opportunity to practice trauma-sensitive language, identify warning signs through case studies, and lead grounding exercises with your peers

Join us in this transformative workshop and take a crucial step towards becoming a more compassionate, skilled, and trauma-informed coach.
