“Who does the work belong to?” Is a critical question in our coaching profession. A coach has the responsibility to bring to their own awareness the boundary between their own work and the work of the coachee. And give back to the coachee their work. Holding with clarity this distinction sits at the centre of an Ethical Coaching practice, and yet, every coach in every moment of their life and work are yet a work in progress. On the one hand, the coach enters the coaching space with an egoless attitude, and meets with the coachee where they are, and yet hold themselves with “no intention, memory, and desire” as Bion would put it. On the other hand, and at the same time, the Coach in a contract and holds a responsibility either towards a specific goal or/and towards the overall awareness, growth and development of the coaching, in any definition, perspective and direction the coachee sets for themselves. Hence the role of the Coach constantly operates in a space of paradox and ambivalence. Holding oneself in a space of ambivalence brings a sense of intrinsic dissonance, comes with a subtle and constant, yet high, emotional cost. Who takes care of the Coach and their emotional cost, whilst they take care of the Coachee?
